SMT Acquires ROMCO

DALLAS — SMT, a Brussels‑based distributor and after‑sales partner for the equipment and transport industry, has expanded into the United States through its acquisition of ROMCO Equipment Co., a Texas‑based Volvo Construction Equipment dealer.

The transaction closed March 9, 2022, transferring ownership of ROMCO’s 12 locations across Texas. The offices are in Austin, Carmine, Fort Worth, Longview, San Antonio, Buffalo, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Houston, Midland, the Rio Grande Valley and Stephenville.

ROMCO, founded in 1961 and previously owned by the Mullins family, is the exclusive Volvo Construction Equipment distributor in most of Texas. The company has more than 290 employees and has operated as a family‑owned business for more than six decades.

SMT, also family‑owned, has more than 75 years of experience in the construction equipment industry and operates in 30 countries across Europe, Africa and now the United States. The company is considered a high‑performing Volvo dealer and provides equipment distribution and advanced aftermarket solutions.

“We are thrilled to expand our network into the U.S. by acquiring ROMCO’s successful operations in Texas,” SMT Group CEO Jerome Barioz said in a statement. He said the company plans to apply its global investments in systems and solutions to improve uptime, productivity and customer satisfaction.

SMT said it also plans to invest in rental operations, technical upgrades and employee development while leveraging ROMCO’s long‑standing experience in the Texas market.

“The end has come for involvement of the Mullins family in ROMCO, but it’s a bright new beginning under SMT’s ownership,” said Robert Mullins, owner and CEO of ROMCO. “SMT will provide the leadership and resources needed to meet the industry’s future.”

Charlie Clarkson, president of ROMCO, said the company looks forward to expanding its offerings and customer support through SMT’s global reach.

Stephen Roy, president of Volvo Construction Equipment Region Americas, said SMT brings extensive experience with the Volvo CE brand and an innovative approach to customer service. He also acknowledged the Mullins family’s legacy in customer support.

ROMCO Inc., based in Dallas, is the parent company of ROMCO Equipment Co., ROMCO Paving Equipment, and ROMCO Material Processing Systems. Its divisions serve construction and mining markets across Texas. ROMCO also owns Material Producers Construction Services, which provides installation and maintenance services for construction materials equipment.

In addition to Volvo Construction Equipment, ROMCO represents several equipment manufacturers, including GOMACO, Sandvik, Hitachi, Atlas Copco and Yanmar, among others.

SMT employs more than 1,700 people worldwide and is one of Volvo Group’s long‑standing partners. The company said it applies consistent operational standards across its global network to create value for customers and suppliers.
