Simple Volvo hybrid system delivers up to 20% more fuel efficiency

The boom lowering movement of the EC300E Hybrid hydraulic excavator charges the energy accumulators used to power the hydraulic pump.

The best ideas are often the simplest. Volvo CE has taken this idea to heart with its ingenious new EC300E Hybrid.

Unlike other systems that capture energy from the rotation of the excavator superstructure to provide electric power to the engine, Volvo's new hydraulic hybrid system recovers energy from the rotation of the excavator superstructure to provide electric power to the engine.Volvo's new hydraulic hybrid system recovers the "free" energy produced by the hydraulic excavator's boom lowering movement to supercharge the combustion engine system.

Powerful, smooth boom lowering movements charge the 20-litre hydraulic accumulators, which then transfer the energy to the hydraulic assist motors to power the hydraulic pump. Controllability and performance levels are identical to those of the standard EC300E, including the ability to work in ECO and Hybrid modes simultaneously.

RAPID RETURN ON INVESTMENT FOR EXCAVATION APPLICATIONS

This clever and simple system not only takes the load off the engine, but also reduces fuel consumption by 20% and CO2 emissions by up to 10%. When used for excavation applications (particularly with 90° rotation), the return on investment from this simple approach can be seen in just over a year. The idea is just as simple as the mechanics, consisting of a few additional components that are easy to maintain.

This type of technology is yet another example of Volvo CE's commitment to innovation and the development of more sustainable and cost-effective solutions for its customers. The EC300E hybrid is the first in a new range of hydraulic excavators and opens a new chapter in the way we build the world we want to live in.
