Volvo FMX Miner: Taking Mining Performance in Africa to the Next Level

Built for demanding mining operations

This year at SMT Africa, we introduced the new Volvo Trucks FMX Miner, a purpose-built solution engineered for demanding mining environments. More than a heavy-duty truck, the FMX Miner combines power, payload capacity, traction, durability and advanced safety technologies to keep mining operations moving efficiently.

At its heart is the Volvo D13 engine, delivering 520 hp and 2,500 Nm of torque at just over 1,000 rpm. This combination provides the power required to handle heavy loads while maintaining strong performance at low engine speeds.

"Power where it counts"

The Volvo FMX Miner is available in two configurations to meet different operational requirements. The 8x4 version offers a payload capacity of 46 tonnes, while the 10x4 configuration increases capacity to 60 tonnes. Both are designed to combine high productivity with the strength required for intensive mining applications.

Its I-Shift automated gearbox has been adapted for mining operations, with one crawler gear on the 8x4 and two crawler gears on the 10x4. Combined with Hill Assist, the system provides greater control when starting with a heavy load or operating on steep slopes.

Traction Control, full differential locks and a flexible chassis help keep the drive wheels in contact with the road. Together, these features maximise grip, reduce wheel spin and help maintain stability on rough or slippery haul roads.

Designed around mining productivity

Productivity is not only about engine power. Loading, transporting and tipping material efficiently are equally important.

The FMX Miner features a wide tipper body designed to provide a generous loading target, helping larger excavators operate efficiently. The body uses HARDOX® TUF 500, with rounded corners and an anti carry-back design to promote cleaner material release during tipping.

The rear architecture has also been developed specifically for mining applications. Protected lighting and a clean rear configuration help safeguard critical components while supporting different operating scenarios, including stockpiling and tipping into crushers.

Safety and control in demanding conditions

Safety is at the core of the FMX Miner. The truck can be equipped with technologies including Collision Warning with Emergency Brake, Driver Alert Support, Hill Assist, dual power steering and a Fire Suppression System. Visibility is supported by camera systems, LED lighting and reflective elements for demanding working environments.

Its intelligent tipping technology adds another level of control by monitoring information such as payload, body position and truck inclination in real time. The system continuously analyses vehicle stability and can prevent tipping when operating conditions become unsafe. Assisted lowering and empty-body detection also contribute to greater control while helping reduce stress on the chassis.

Ready to take mining performance further

From its reinforced chassis and heavy-duty drivetrain to its high payload capacity and advanced safety systems, the Volvo FMX Miner has been developed around the realities of demanding mining operations.

For operators across Africa looking to combine performance, durability, productivity and safety, the FMX Miner brings these capabilities together in one purpose-built mining truck.

More than a truck, it is a reliable partner designed to keep mining operations moving, even when conditions get tough. Our clients have put the Volvo FMX Miner to the test at a mine in Ghana, providing valuable first-hand feedback on its performance in real mining conditions. Watch their experience with this brand new truck. (rajouter un lien avec l'article client testimony)
